Take-Two confirms Grand Theft Auto 6 is still coming fall 2025

In terms of major releases for 2025, Grand Theft Auto 6 is likely to be the biggest of the year. Previosly, the release window was slated for the back half of the year, but now publisher Take Two has said the next installment in the hugely popular open-world series will arrive sometime in fall 2025.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is one of the most anticipated upcoming PC games. Now that we’re 12 years (!) away from GTA 5 first hitting shelves, demand and excitement for the next modern day open-world game from Rockstar Games has been pushing into fever pitch for some time. It almost doesn’t seem real that the next sequel could be so close, but right now it’s planned to be here in a matter of months.

In a quarterly earnings call, Take-Two CEO and chairman Strauss Zelnick mentioned the GTA 6 release window as fall 2025. This is more specific than the previous timeline of sometime within the last six months of the year. He lists the action game alongside Civilization 7,  Mafia: The Old Country and Borderlands 4 as part of what is “one of the strongest years ever” for the publisher. Keenly, none of these dates have changed, and the order they’re mentioned suggests GTA 6 is coming before Borderlands 4.

True enough, those are all big projects in their own right, but Grand Theft Auto 6 is on another level. It’s the kind of release that has everyone in the industry on tenterhooks waiting for a confirmed date. EA commented that it is prepared to shift the next Battlefield depending on certain variables within the industry, with the belief being that the new GTA is the most important unknown quantity of them all.

This is the only mention of Rockstar’s tentpole franchise, so there’s no indication of when we might hear more. The first trailer arrived at the end of 2023, so news has been a slow drip. But putting together something the scale of GTA 6 is an incredible feat of game development, and Take-Two and Rockstar may not have a fully tied down date internally just yet.
