On the evening of March 12, Lady Gaga took to the stage at the 95th Academy Awards. Her performance of “Hold My Hand,” a song from Top Gun: Maverick, was a stripped-down rendition. For her outfit, she chose a black t-shirt and ripped jeans. Accompanying her were musicians on guitar, bass, and drums. You can watch the performance below.
Prior to performing the song, Lady Gaga delivered a brief speech about its significance to her: “My friend BloodPop and I wrote this song for the Top Gun: Maverick movie in my home studio. It’s very personal to me and I believe that we all require each other. We require a lot of love to navigate through life and occasionally, we all need a hero. Heroes are all around us in unexpected places, and even if you feel shattered inside, you may find that you can be your own hero.”
“This year, “Hold My Hand” is a contender for the Best Original Song award, competing against other songs like “Lift Me Up” by Rihanna from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, “This Is a Life” by Son Lux, Mitski, and David Byrne in their Everything Everywhere All at Once collaboration, “Applause” by Sofia Carson from Tell It Like a Woman, and “Naatu Naatu” by Rahul Sipligunj, Kaala Bhairava, M.M. Keeravani from the RRR cut.”
Lady Gaga, in collaboration with BloodPop® and Benjamin Rice, served as the producer for “Hold My Hand.” Prior to the official release of the single, she had already teased it, stating that she had been working on it for years. Gaga also released a music video for the song, featuring footage from both the 1986’s Top Gun and its 2022 sequel, as well as scenes of her singing and playing piano on an airstrip.
Lady Gaga last performed at the Oscars in 2019, the same year she who Best Original Song for her A Star Is Born ballad “Shallow”.
