Spotify has rolled out a new in-app messaging feature that allows users to share music, podcasts, and audiobooks while chatting with friends—all without leaving the app. Available to both free and premium users, the feature is designed to make sharing content more seamless and conversational.
The company says the move comes after repeated user requests for a dedicated space to share songs and playlists within Spotify itself. The feature is currently limited to users aged 16 and above, will be rolled out only on mobile devices, and is available in select markets.
At launch, messaging supports only one-on-one conversations. Users can send tracks, podcasts, or audiobooks directly from the “Now Playing” screen by tapping the share icon, selecting a friend, and hitting send. Messages allow emoji reactions and text replies. Spotify will also recommend contacts to message based on shared playlists, prior interactions, or whether users are on a Family or Duo plan.
How to message on Spotify
- While listening to a track, podcast, or audiobook, open the “Now Playing” view.
- Tap the Share icon and choose a friend from the list.
- Hit Send to share instantly.
- Messages can be accessed by tapping your profile picture in the top-left corner, where a new Messages tab appears.
- Once a request is accepted, users can respond with emojis or text, and continue sharing Spotify content.
For artists, authors and creators, the feature could mean wider discovery, as fans are now able to spread their work more organically through conversations within the platform. Spotify says the tool is designed to complement—not replace—other ways of sharing content externally via SMS or social media.
Privacy and security
Spotify has emphasised safeguards for users. Message requests can be accepted or declined, and it’s possible to block others or opt out of the feature entirely through Settings. Messages are encrypted, with content moderated under Spotify’s Terms of Use and Platform Rules. Reported material will be reviewed, while proactive detection tools will monitor for harmful or illegal content.
With the update, Spotify is positioning itself not just as a listening platform but also as a social space—where sharing a playlist, audiobook, or podcast could spark a conversation.
