President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the National Institutes of Health is facing questions from a Senate panel. Dr. Jay Bhattacharya is a health economist at Stanford University and was an outspoken critic of government COVID-19 shutdowns and vaccine policies, clashing with some former NIH officials. A Senate health committee is considering his nomination Wednesday. Its Republican chairman has said Bhattacharya aims to restore faith in research. Democrats want to know if he’ll defend the NIH, the leading funder of medical research, from drastic funding and staff cuts.
