Qualcomm has announced Quick Charge 5 Plus, a new charging solution that will help your phone stay cooler while charging. While the company’s Quick Charge fast-charging solution has been available for more than a decade, the chip maker hasn’t updated it since 2020.
Like Quick Charge 5, the new standard offers charging speeds of more than 100W, but Qualcomm says the new standard will keep your phone cooler and offer a more consistent charging experience.
Since heat is one of the biggest causes of battery health degradation, the new standard will help increase battery longevity, all while offering super-fast charging speeds. Qualcomm says Quick Charge 5 Plus does this by smartly adjusting the voltage and current. While it leads to lower temperatures and allows the phone to maintain peak charging speeds for a longer time, it can push up to 140W of power at 20V/7A.
However, the most impressive thing about Quick Charge 5 Plus is that it is compatible with all previous versions of Quick Charge standards, all the way to Quick Charge 2. What it means is that most modern smartphones launched in the last decade or so will benefit from it.
Qualcomm said that “Quick Charge also works seamlessly with devices powered by non-Snapdragon platforms, delivering a charging experience equivalent to competitors’ chargers.” This means Quick Charge 5 Plus may also work with smartphones powered by MediaTek, Exynos and other mobile chipsets.
And while the chip maker did not provide any statistics about efficiency and speed gains Quick Charge 5 Plus brings to the table, apart from lower temperatures, we can assume that devices compatible with the new standard will charge faster than they did. The first Quick Charge 5 Plus compatible devices will be unveiled at this year’s Snapdragon Summit, which will take place from September 23 to September 25, while accessories like chargers will hit markets sometime later this year.
