Earlier this month, OpenAI upgraded ChatGPT-4o with advanced image generation capabilities, and since then the internet is finding wild use cases to create fascinating images using the AI chatbot.
While the functionality was initially limited to those on ChatGPT’s paid tier, OpenAI made it available to free users last week. Now, OpenAI is reportedly testing a new watermark which will be added to images generated by people using the free version of ChatGPT. The news comes from AI researcher Tibot Blaho, who shared a screenshot on X, who noticed that the latest version of ChatGPT beta for Android includes a line of code which says “image-gen-watermark-for-free”.

The move comes after millions of users around the world rushed to ChatGPT to create Studio Ghibli style images using ImageGen, OpenAI’s latest and most powerful model shipped to date.
Ever since ChatGPT blew up in 2022, the AI industry has been pushing companies to add a watermark for AI generated media, so one can easily distinguish between human and machine generated content. To give you a quick recap, AI chatbots like Gemini and Meta AI already add watermarks to all of their images.
However, OpenAI seems to be heading in a different direction as it only plans to watermark images generated by free users. While OpenAI hasn’t officially commented on the matter, the decision to watermark images generated by free users may be because the AI startup wants to push users to ChatGPT’s paid tiers.
OpenAI also updated its terms of service on April 4, saying that if users choose to share an image or video publicly on ChatGPT, or sharing to Sora’s explore page, the company will have the “right to reproduce, distribute, modify, display and perform it for the purpose of operating and promoting the Services.”
