Morocco is expanding its efforts to humanely manage the millions of stray dogs that roam the country’s streets. After facing scrutiny from animal rights groups, authorities are expanding six-year-old efforts to neuter and vaccinate strays, minimizing the need for euthanasia while also gradually reducing their population. “Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return” programs align Morocco’s approach with many countries throughout Europe and North America. A center that has treated hundreds of dogs in the forests outside the North African kingdom’s capital is the first center to open as part of a nationwide effort to bolster animal control strategies, balancing public health and animal well-being.
