A federal judge in Vermont has granted a Russian-born scientist and Harvard University researcher release from immigration custody as she deals with a criminal charge of smuggling frog embryos into the U.S. Colleagues and academics testified Wednesday on Kseniia Petrova’s behalf, saying she is doing valuable research in pursuing cures for cancer. The 30-year-old Petrova is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service in Louisiana. Lawyers say she’s to be brought to Massachusetts for a bail hearing next week on the smuggling charge. Petrova was detained in February after passing through a Customs and Border Protection checkpoint at the Boston airport.
