ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, was down for thousands of users across the world. While it is still unclear how many people are affected by the recent outage, according to DownDetector, the website that tracks the online status of various services, users reported that the outage started somewhere around 12 PM.
In the latest update shared by OpenAI on its incidents page, the Microsoft-backed startup said, “We are continuing to work on implementing the mitigation and we are now seeing recovery on API. Full recovery across all listed services may take another few hours. We will continue to provide updates as progress is made.”
Over the last few hours, more than 800 people from India have reported on Downdetector alone that they are unable to use the AI chatbot. Following user reports, OpenAI also updated its status to reflect that they were “currently experiencing issues” with the AI chatbot.

In a post on X, OpenAI said that it is observing elevated error rates and latency across ChatGPT and the API. “Our engineers have identified the root cause and are working as fast as possible to fix the issue,” the AI company added. Paid ChatGPT subscribers who tried using OpenAI’s text-to-video generation model, Sora, also reported facing problems.

“Nearly all ChatGPT components are now working properly for all users. Please note that we still see an elevated error rate with voice mode and we are working to completely fix this component”, said OpenAI on its status page.
While some on social media said that ChatGPT was working just fine, others reported that they were constantly getting network errors. Users added that the website, mobile and desktop versions of the AI platform were loading but not working for them.
This is the second time this month that ChatGPT users have faced downtime. Also, in the early morning of June 9, OpenAI said that ChatGPT search was facing some issues, but it managed to restore services.

Around a week ago, several users took to DownDetector and X, saying that the AI chatbot was down. On February 14, the AI chatbot suffered a massive worldwide outage, which lasted for around two hours. With OpenAI’s services affected for the last 5 hours on Tuesday, this might be the longest ChatGPT outage we have seen so far.
Several X users have shared their thoughts on the outage. While some resorted to sharing memes, others are agitated that the AI chatbot isn’t working.
It’s not just desktop, it’s mobile. The ChatGPT app on my iPhone is genuinely unusable, it constantly errors out with a network error. The Gemini app feels half-baked, Claude is, also half-baked.. depressingly the only one that feels decent is the Grok one. What the fuck happened
