Scientists have found evidence of monkey kidnappings in Panama. Video footage shows male capuchin monkeys carrying howler monkey babies between 2022 and 2023. The motivations for one species of monkey to kidnap infants of another remains unclear. Researchers had been studying the capuchins to understand how this group uses stone tools. They said most or all of the abducted baby howler monkeys died, likely from starvation. But they don’t believe the capuchins harmed the howlers on purpose. The research was published Monday in Current Biology.
