Apple is all set to unveil the iPhone 17 series on September 9. Unlike the last couple of years, the company’s upcoming smartphone lineup is expected to shake things up with a new design, chipset and a redesigned “Liquid Glass” interface.
In the last couple of months, the rumour mill has been constantly trying to predict what the iPhone 17 will offer, and now we have a good idea of how it might stand against the currently available iPhone 16. While nothing is certain at the moment, from design to specs, here’s how the iPhone 17 may differ from the latest iPhone.
Design and display
While the vanilla iPhone 17 might look just like the current generation model, Apple is reportedly bumping up the screen size from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches this year. Also, rumour has it that the iPhone 17 base model will be the first non-Pro model to get the ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate OLED screen.
Apple is also said to be using Samsung’s M14 OLED panel, which should help increase brightness, reduce power draw and make the display last longer. Another speculation suggests that the iPhone 17 base model could get Always-On Display, but we suggest you to take this information with a grain of salt.
Performance
The iPhone 17 is expected to come with the company’s in-house developed A19 chipset, which was previously rumoured to be fabricated on TSMC’s 2nm process, but now multiple reports have stated that it will use the 3nm node. However, the new chipset will still get a decent performance bump as well as improve efficiency in AI tasks.
And while Apple never officially discloses the amount of RAM, speculations suggest that the iPhone 17 may have 12GB of RAM, but we will have to wait a few more days to know for sure.
iOS 26 with Liquid Glass
Another major upgrade coming to the iPhone 17 is Apple’s controversial Liquid Glass design language. Earlier this year at WWDC, Apple unveiled iOS 26, a new, fresh-looking operating system for iPhones that comes with a translucent design.

While some liked the transparent-looking user elements like buttons and text, many shared their displeasure with the new design, forcing Apple to give users the option to turn off the translucent effects.
Apart from the visual changes, Apple also redesigned the Camera app and introduced some new features like Call Screening and Live Translate, to name a few.
Camera
In terms of optics, the iPhone 17 is said to sport the same dual camera setup as the current generation model – meaning, you get a 48MP primary sensor in addition to a 12MP ultrawide lens. While the upcoming phone may have the same hardware as last year, the new chipset might offer improved image signal processing, which should help take better pictures.
Rumour also has it that the iPhone 17 will have an upgraded 24MP selfie camera, which may prove to be a huge step from the iPhone 16’s 12MP front shooter.

Charging and battery
Another area where the iPhone 17 will differ from its predecessor is the battery life. Not only will the upcoming phone get a bigger battery, but it is also touted to support reverse wireless charging. This means that users may soon be able to charge accessories like AirPods, Apple Watch, and other without having to carry a charger.
