The newest and most affordable smartphone in the iPhone 17 series, the vanilla iPhone 17, has been formally released by Apple. The most recent model from the Cupertino-based tech behemoth features an enhanced 48MP main camera along with a new ProMotion display.
The iPhone 17, with its Liquid Glass surface and the latest iOS 26, will be on sale starting September 19 and will retail for $799, roughly Rs 82,900. Our in-depth guide will assist you in making the best decision if you are thinking about upgrading from your old iPhone 16 to the newest model.
Design and display
While the vanilla iPhone 17 looks very similar to the previous iPhone 16, Apple has bumped up the screen size from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches this year. Also, the iPhone 17 base model is the first non-Pro model to get the ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate XDR OLED screen.
It is powered by the A19 chip, the Super Retina XDR display that offers up to 3,000 nits of brightness, and has Ceramic Shield 2, which it says provides three times greater scratch resistance. Additionally, ProMotion and Always-on Display are now supported, which improves scrolling and content viewing.
In contrast, the iPhone 16 had a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and 1,600 nits (HDR). It provides a 6.1-inch XDR Super Retina screen.
Performance
The A19 chip, which has a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU, forms the brain behind the iPhone 17. It is constructed with a 3nm TSMC processor. According to the firm, the most recent update is 20 per cent quicker than the iPhone 16’s A18 processor.
Camera
Additionally, the iPhone 17 has the first square front camera sensor, the Centre Stage front camera. The new sensor records greater detail in addition to having a larger field of vision. Users will no longer need to spin their iPhone in order to snap a landscape selfie, which is another noteworthy development. Additionally, it supports 4K HDR ultra-stabilised video.

Apple claims that the new 48MP Fusion Main camera has “an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto” and says the new sensor has up to four times the resolution of the previous model.
iOS 26 with Liquid Glass
Apple’s iPhone 17 features the Liquid Glass design, a translucent design introduced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) alongside iOS 26. In addition to visual changes, the Camera app will be redesigned with new features like Call Screening and Live Translate.
Charging and battery
The iPhone 17 is capable of charging for up to 50 minutes in just 20 minutes, using the company’s new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter. In contrast to the iPhone 16 basic model, which had 128GB of capacity, the iPhone 17 has 256 GB of storage. Five colour options are available: black, lavender, mist blue, sage, and white.
