Torchlight Infinite Season 9 sets the free Steam ARPG on a life of crime

Read Time:5 Minute, 15 Second

We might not be getting GTA 6 this year, but free Steam ARPG Torchlight Infinite has got you covered. The lightning-fast Diablo challenger is back with a fresh update that’s all about getting on the wrong side of the law, and it promises to be an ideal way to get your loot fix ahead of the next Path of Exile 2 league. Torchlight Infinite Season 9 is named ‘Outlaw’ and centers on a mode of the same name with “high-stakes missions” that have you clearing out bodyguards, carjacking transport vehicles, and stealing valuable supply caches. On top of that comes a new hero transformation and a whole wealth of new gear and skills.

Torchlight Infinite is an ARPG I’ll happily recommend. Even if I don’t stick with it for quite as long as the likes of a new Path of Exile league, blasting my way through its progression is always a good time, and worthy of consideration among the best games like Diablo. It moves super fast, offers a huge amount of buildcrafting potential, and it’s a free Steam game, so you don’t even have to pull out your wallet to play. On top of that, developer XD keeps coming up with particularly novel seasonal concepts, and Outlaw mode is no different.

As you explore the endgame Netherrealm, you’ll encounter transport vehicles belonging to Tower Corporation, escorted by bodyguards. Defeating these will drop supply caches, but engaging them calls in additional waves of reinforcements. When you’re strong enough, you’ll be able to wipe out all the hostels, snagging seasonal currency and materials, and then crack open the main target’s valuable supply cache.

If you’re still working on your build, however, you’ll have to decide whether to prioritize chasing the primary car or focus your efforts on the troops. Occasionally, you’ll come across special ‘encrypted transports’ that hold even more valuable loot, with the bonus chance to find Tower Accelerators that grant you a massive speed boost, or trigger a ‘chain multiplication’ event that can triple or even quadruple your payout.

Of course, crime comes with consequences. The more heists you pull off, the higher your notoriety grows, meaning you’ll face tougher resistance. The good news is that with enough weight to your name among the underworld, you can access black-market bounties that add fresh challenges to your runs with payouts to match. Reach the pinnacle and you’ll be offered ‘astronomical orders,’ which require that you put down a deposit to show your sincerity but promise a veritable jackpot to those capable of delivering.

Torchlight Infinite Season 9 Outlaw - A payout from the Central Vault heist in the free-to-play ARPG.

The climax of Outlaw mode, of course, is a heist. Earn enough Tower Coins and you can fund a run on the central vault, where you race against time to crack open vaults. Every one you bust into raises the alert level, and if you push your luck to the max you’ll find yourself facing off against the Chief Security Officer. Manage to put him in his place and your investment will pay off big time. XD community manager Andre notes that these are designed as “occasional, high-reward events, not something you need to do constantly.”

Alongside these, you’ll also earn Tower Tokens, which are used for “a pure gambling mechanic” called Hot Streak. There are six different types, and each lets you reroll equipment, item stats, destinies, or stacks of currency. Strike it lucky and you can create some incredibly powerful gear, but you risk destroying or losing everything you’ve put up on the board. If you love the stakes of PoE’s Vaal Orbs, Hot Streak seems right up your alley.

Tower Sequences offer a powerful new crafting system that lets you improve non-legendary equipment in all manner of ways, offering more than 200 upgrade ‘sequences’ that you can manually research, or steal from the Tower convoys. On the legendary side, there’s plenty of new gear to discover at the highest rarity tiers, such as the elemental-boosting ‘Trinity’ necklace and ‘Solid River,’ a helmet that doubles your spell burst output.

Also joining the fray in Torchlight Infinite Season 9 is the ‘Unsullied Blade’ transformation for Lightbringer Rosa. This makes her into an all-out attack character that funnels her mana into enhancing damage. Her skills accumulate Mercury, a resource that creates a wide area of effect around you. The damage you deal to the strongest foe in this region is recorded, and then a portion of it is delivered as an AoE effect to all other enemies within the zone, allowing you to create a single-target build that’s still capable of clearing packs.

Things don’t stop there; XD has been cooking up its usual wide spread of overhauls. The imbue skill system has been turned into ‘focus skills,’ which charge up based on specific triggers and unleash potent effects when they reach full capacity. You could, for example, use ‘Flame Focus’ to stack up as you ignite enemies, setting off massive explosions, or employ ‘Sharp Focus,’ which builds with every attack you land to deliver a single, high-impact strike.

Beyond that comes endgame loot changes to make it “more rewarding and less repetitive,” with fewer but higher-value Secret Realms. The Supreme Showdown has a fresh boss rotation including a rework for General Redscale. The loot filter now offers the ability to customize drop noises with your own sound files, a new recycling system allows you to cash out unwanted items directly from your inventory, and the Trade House’s price-checking system has been made more accurate.
