If you haven’t already sussed it from my ramblings here on PCGamesN, I’m a big FPS guy, so take a guess at what my most anticipated new multiplayer shooter is this year? Bungie’s Marathon? Nope. The next Call of Duty, rumored to be a spinoff of the iconic Black Ops 2? Nuh-uh. Remedy’s surreal FBC Firebreak? Wrong again. It’s Splitgate 2. Very soon, you’ll all have the chance to try it out for yourself and join me in my portal obsession. The release date for the new Splitgate 2 open beta have been revealed, alongside the cryptic promise that it’ll include “infinite maps.”
The original Splitgate was a joy to play – its blend of Halo-like gunplay and strategic portaling was so addictive, but as an indie project with a tiny team it lacked the infrastructure and necessary levels of content to keep me completely hooked. Well, Splitgate 2 isn’t going to struggle in that department. Transplanting the core gameplay of the original in Unreal Engine 5, mixing in some light hero shooter elements, and stuffing it to the eyeballs with game modes, it’s looking like a real winner. I played a bit of the FPS game‘s open alpha earlier in the year and loved it, despite my past concerns that leaning into classes and abilities may detract from its iconic portal mechanic.
With the Splitgate 2 release date set to arrive later this year, developer 1047 Games is giving us all a fresh chance to give it a spin, this time upgrading things to an open beta. The beta will be packed with new content too.
Splitgate 2’s arsenal is expanding to over 25 unique weapons with the addition of guns like the Borealis, an “energy carbine power weapon.” There will be more than ten game modes to enjoy, including the return of Takedown from the original Splitgate – this compact survival mode sees you race to element the entire enemy squad before their respawn timers tick down to zero and put them back in the fight.

The map pool is increasing in size too. Now, 1047 says that there will be over 15 traditional maps to experience across all those game modes, but it also teases that there will actually be an “infinite” number of maps. The open beta’s extremely short teaser trailer appears to suggest that a custom map editor will be shown off, which is a very exciting prospect indeed.
The Splitgate 2 open beta will begin on Thursday, May 22. 1047 Games hasn’t yet confirmed how long it will run for, but it’ll be available to players on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series XS, and Xbox One, with full crossplay support.
