No matter what theater of war you prefer, you’ll be well catered to. If you like the classic stylings of medieval games, then the turn-based tactics of Field of Glory 2: Medieval will be just for you. Set during the High Middle Ages, it adapts tabletop wargaming sensibilities into an accurate battle simulation featuring 29 nations and factions, each with historically realistic units and armies. Jump into iconic scenarios, enjoy history-warping ‘what if’ hypotheticals, or use its random map generator to produce an endless flow of custom conflicts.

A pleasingly proficient tie-in to the beloved TV show, space game Battlestar Galactica Deadlock impressed us at launch. Taking command of the Colonial Fleet to defend the Twelve Colonies during the First Cylon War, mankind’s survival rests on your shoulders. Matt praised the way it “captures the feeling of being on the back foot, which is what Battlestar Galactica is all about,” while also using its position in the timeline to play some distinctive cards that will throw a wrench into your plans.

Last but not least, we have Fantasy General 2. Don’t let the straightforward name put you off; this long-awaited successor to the iconic ’90s turn-based strategy game gives it a modern level of polish over 20 years on, and is perfect if you prefer your tactics to wander into the magical realm inhabited by the likes of Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. Make smart use of terrain, protect your fiercest fighters as they grow into legendary champions, and you might just come out ahead.

Fantasy General 2 - A dragon soars over a battle, unleashing its fiery breath.

Field of Glory 2: Medieval, Battlestar Galactica Deadlock, and Fantasy General 2 are all available for free via Steam until Thursday July 17 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST / 7pm CEST. They’re yours to keep once claimed. Don’t miss out; head here to grab them all, and take a look at Slitherine’s other savings while you’re there.

With so much money saved, you might even fancy treating yourself to the best gaming monitor, giving you all the space you’ll need to enjoy these immense grand strategy games in their full glory.
