New ‘Morrowind in Elden Ring’ mod has my attention, despite the poison swamps

After the huge success of Skyrim and the Oblivion Remake, one big question remains: Will Bethesda ever return to one of its most beloved but outdated RPGs? The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is unquestionably a classic, but recommending it in 2025 comes with a giant list of caveats. There are, however, several fan-built alternatives. Tamriel Rebuilt polishes and expands the original, while Skywind moves the whole thing over to the Skyrim engine. But what about a totally different approach? Modder ‘InfernoPlus’ has taken a more dramatic step and put the world of Morrowind in Elden Ring.

“Morrowind is one of my favorite games of all time, but goddamn is it dated,” InfernoPlus explains. “So my goal here is to try and combine the world and lore of Morrowind with the combat of a souls game.” They say the project is roughly halfway done, and originally started within Dark Souls. The huge world contained within one of Bethesda’s best RPGs didn’t fit into DS1, although it did squeeze into DS3, but recent advancements to Elden Ring modding made that a more appealing prospect. “And, well, Elden Ring is just a better game than Dark Souls 3,” they laugh.

“The further I got into it, the more possible it started to look,” InfernoPlus remarks. “The world generation is basically finished.” You can see this clearly when they climb up to a high point and look out across the map – it’s an impressive sight. Each region comes with distinct weather and lighting; head down to the Ashlands and you’ll find a grey, overcast wasteland, but traverse to the Bitter Coast and you’ll discover a vibrant, swampy region with regular rainfall.

InfernoPlus has also totally reworked the water and made it operate much more cleanly in a manner that befits Elden Ring. They couldn’t help but borrow a FromSoftware favorite here, however: “I was obligated to convert Morrowind’s regular-old swamps into poison swaps. I like to call this ‘poison swamp manifest destiny.'” I can’t say I’m happy about this, but it did bring a smile to my face.

For now, InfernoPlus says, “The world is there, but it’s completely devoid of actual gameplay.” They ask for assistance with three aspects of building Elden Ring mods: overcoming the limit on spawning characters in, building nav meshes to ensure correct AI pathing, and finding 3D artists willing to help make modern-looking renditions of Morrowind’s clothing and armor. If possible, they’re also eager to ‘Morrowindify’ some of the best Elden Ring bosses.

As for any potential legal issues, InfernoPlus notes that the mod does not contain Morrowind game files at all. Instead it requires you to own both Morrowind and Elden Ring, and then reads files directly from your install of the Elder Scrolls game to rebuild it inside FromSoftware’s game.

You may already be familiar with InfernoPlus’s work, as they’ve previously come up with such bizarre concepts as inserting Among Us or Halo into Dark Souls. They’ve certainly got the chops to pull this off, then; I’ll be keeping a close eye on it. If you want to see it completed, InfernoPlus encourages you to let them know. “YouTube is effectively my full-time job, and if I’m going to spend six months building a mod I need to know it’s what my viewers want me to do.”

It might be a while until this ambitious project is completed, but I’d wager we’ll see it finished before we hear The Elder Scrolls 6 release date. If you’re doing a lot of modding yourself, upgrading to the best gaming CPU will come in handy.
