Mario Kart World costumes – how to unlock and equip them

Hey, where’d you get those cool Mario Kart World costumes? Don’t worry; we’ve got all the information you need right here to deck your Donkey Kong out in a different suit or turn Yoshi into a biker. Without further ado, here’s how to expand your wardrobe with all of the Mario Kart World outfits.

How to unlock costumes in Mario Kart World

Mario Kart World’s costumes represent a first for the racing game series, allowing you to apply outfits to your Mario Kart World characters. They’re quite easy to get, and once you unlock them, you can use them at any time. Not every character has outfits, and some have quite a lot, but we imagine more will come in the future.

You can get Mario Kart costumes from Yoshi’s Diner. When you see the diner, go through the drive-in and scoop up the grab bag of food. Hit ZL to eat the food, as you would with any Mario Kart World item, and then you’ll get a new outfit. You also get a speed boost, which works on every character, whereas the costumes don’t. There are various diners across the locations on the world map, and they offer different outfits from the menu options. Each area’s diner gives a themed outfit, be it swimwear, a classic racer outfit, or something more exotic.

It’s important to note that you can’t pick up a food item if you already have two items in the top left corner. If you do, make sure to use one before you pull up to the Diner, so you can pick up the meal and get the benefits.

We’re still testing exactly how you unlock specific outfits, but it seems that the character you’re currently playing as will receive an outfit based on the theme of the map. I got Yoshi’s Touring costume from Shy Guy Bazaar, and my fellow PT-ers received Vampire Waluigi from Boo Cinema. You can then equip the outfit in the character menu, as they appear as different options.

Mario Kart World costumes don’t do anything beyond giving your favorite racers a fresh set of threads.

Which characters get outfits in Mario Kart World?

Not every racer gets new outfits, sadly. Not yet, at least – we may see more in updates or DLC down the line. Currently, it appears that the classic characters returning from other titles are the ones with wardrobe options. Sorry, but there’s no alternative outfit for the cow.
