Last Epoch Season 3 has a date, and my favorite ARPG is getting prehistoric

I’ve really enjoyed Path of Exile 2 so far, regardless of its early-access ups and downs, and the new PoE season has been a welcome chance to return to its iconic predecessor. Diablo 4 Season 9 is about to start next week, too, but I’m already looking ahead. My favorite ARPG right now has just announced its return, as Eleventh Hour Games confirms the Last Epoch Season 3 release date, and I’m particularly pleased by the promise of some prehistoric predicaments.

For all its many strengths, the PoE 2 launch also highlighted to me just how many ways Last Epoch succeeds in its player-friendly design. I scored it an 8/10 in my Last Epoch review back in February 2024, calling it a worthy challenger to the ARPG throne. Since then, EHG has continued to build on that core, with a wide range of endgame upgrades rolling out for the Season 2 update. There’s still space to grow, but of all the entries on our list of the best games like Diablo, it’s Last Epoch that has taken most of my time of late.

It boasts a phenomenal sense of class identity, offering 15 masteries across the five Last Epoch classes that each feel distinct and flavorful. Every single skill can be tweaked and customized, and it’s all presented in a clear enough manner that it feels surprisingly approachable. The same is true for the crafting systems, which are easy to learn and enable powerful, meaningful upgrades. Its stash system and loot filter are both best in class, offering you ample ways to find, store, and sort all the loot you want.

Following up on its promise for a more regular schedule, Eleventh Hour Games has now unveiled Last Epoch Season 3, Beneath Ancient Skies. “The hunter becomes the hunted,” it teases, and while there are very few glimpses of what we can actually expect, there seems to be a focus on the prehistoric era. Last Epoch’s time-hopping narrative jumps between the ruined far future and the time of the dinosaurs, but it’s been fairly focused on the former of those so far, and I’m quite happy for the potential to spend more time in the lush jungles of way back when.

With EHG staking its place on the calendar, it’ll be interesting to watch how the ARPG space unfolds. Last Epoch Season 2 was pushed back from its planned launch day to give it more room to breathe after Grinding Gear Games slapped its own Path of Exile 2 update right next to it. With Path of Exile 1 leagues now back on schedule, GGG says it’s about to make the calendar “a whole lot busier,” so we could be facing a lot of competition for your time. If you’re tempted to try Last Epoch, you can snag it cheap right now in the ongoing Steam sale.

Last Epoch Season 3, Beneath Ancient Skies, launches Thursday August 21. It’s 20% off on Steam from now through Thursday July 10, meaning you’ll pay just $27.99 / £23.60 for your copy. Grab it here and get your bearings ahead of Season 3.
