Clair Obscur Expedition 33’s director loves this RPG but its dev could go under

The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- isn’t short on acclaim and it’s even been singled out for praise by the director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Unfortunately, developer TooKyo Games is in danger of going under unless The Hundred Line turns enough profit to wipe out its debts.

For TooKyo Games, it must have been a strange moment to have their RPG game, The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- recommended by the director of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

On the one hand, it was a recommendation from a fellow dev but, on the other, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the two games, alongside The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, that dominated The Hundred Line’s launch week.

Now, TooKyo Games founder Kazutaka Kodaka, known as the creator of the Danganronpa series, has revealed the studio is on the brink of closure. Responding to a query about porting The Hundred Line to other platforms, Kodaka stated,

“If I can pay off my debt early and secure enough operating funds for the company, I’d love to get started right away. But right now, we’re still on the brink of going under.”

Like the original Danganronpa, The Hundred Line features a quirky collection of students, trapped in a strange academy. But this time around, instead of engaging in class trials, you have to fend off the monsters laying siege to the building.

Blending visual novel and RPG elements, it’s currently rated Very Positive on Steam. It’s also hit over 10,000 concurrent players, which is no small achievement. But it’s had to compete with the double whammy of both Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. The latter’s release was a ‘shadow drop’, with no way to plan around it.

“We have no plans to port Hundred Line to other platforms, and the chances of that happening are very slim”, Kodaka later added, stating that he would like to update the Steam and Switch versions, also adding multilingual support.

His initial post was greeted by messages of support, but it remains to be seen if TooKyo Games makes enough from The Hundred Line -Last Defense Academy- to keep them afloat.
