How do Clair Obscur Expedition 33 romance and relationships work? A staple of character-driven RPGs these days, the members of Expedition 33 have a lot to talk about, and not a whole lot of time to do it. You need to make it count. With some of them, anyway.

All Clair Obscur Expedition 33 romance and relationship rewards

Note: Expedition 33 relationship levels only become available a decent way through the game. That means anything from this point on can constitute a spoiler. 

Once you settle into Act 2 and the changes that come with it, speaking to the individual members of your party back at camp will sometimes prompt the option to “spend some time” with them.

In these heart-to-heart moments, the two interacting characters typically grow closer, increasing their Relationship level with Verso. This can, at certain levels, unlock new skills, outfits, gradient attacks, and a few other possibilities.

Verso can also play along with Sciel and Lune’s flirting, offering the hint of a relationship—or a fleeting fling at the very least.

Advancing relationship levels simply means conversing with characters back at camp as the main story plays out. Make a habit of speaking to them after major events, and they’ll likely have something new for you. If you miss the exact moment one unlocks, you’ll simply have more cutscenes to watch once you do decide to talk to them. You can’t miss them.

Clair Obscur Expedition 33 relationship quest locations

To reach Relationship level 6 with most characters, you’ll often have to complete a request specific to their story, like finding Lune’s parents or scoring Monoco to the Sacred River. Here’s where to find each quest location to progress your relationship with these characters.

Lune relationship level 6 – Where to find Lune’s parents

To reach relationship level 6 with Lune, Verso agrees to help her find her parents, who perished along with Expedition 46 near Sirene’s island.

As it turns out, they’re in a zone on Sirene’s island—Sirene’s Dress. Float around the island to find this along the hem of her down. It’s an open valley-like area with a tall Gestral merchant outside selling Sirene’s outfit for Sciel.

Venture in and complete the level to unlock the means to max out your relationship with Lune.

Maelle relationship level 6 – Where is the final Axon tower?

You’ll find the tower Maelle needs to visit on the coast west of the monument and the two Axon islands. Cast aside the old story advice that the final Axon is high and out of reach. That is related to the position of the zone, which requires Esquie’s flight ability, not the sheer height of the tower itself.

The place Maelle wants to visit is a much smaller tower than the huge Endless Tower you’ll see displayed as a large rune on the map.

Here, you’ll see a few lifts to quickly scramble to the top of the rickety wooden foundation. Reach the top and use Maelle in a 1-v-1 showdown to complete her request. The solo battle Pictos from the Ancient Gestral Arena can help here.

Leave the zone and you’ll automatically return to camp to talk things over, reaching relationship level 6.

Monoco relationship level 6 – Where is the Sacred River?

The Gestral Stream is a small zone located in a snowy valley on the same landmass as Monoco’s Station. You’ll need Esquie’s flight ability to reach it.

Drop in, enter the zone, and push toward the center to find the stream in question. Once you interact with it, you’ll be challenged to a rematch with the Gestral leader. This fight allows for both Monoco and Verso, so solo-focused Pictos won’t do you much good.

How to max out Esquie’s relationship

You can max out Esquie’s relationship without much effort. Like the rest, you’ll need to wait until you’re about done with the main story outside of relationship-increasing adventures.

For Esquie, he’ll continue to unlock traversal methods as you level up his relationship with Verso. This culminates in a final face-off with Francois, who turns out to be hiding Urrie, his diving rock.

Deliver a replacement rock to Francois and, after a little convincing (with a brawl), you’ll reclaim Urrie, unlocking Esquie’s ability to dive while maxing out your relationship with the most powerful creature in the world.

Can you miss a relationship level in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?

Although how you respond to Sciel or Lune’s romantic advances will lightly affect some conversations and cutscenes going forward, it won’t change how the game ends.

You can only have a brief fling with either Sciel or Lune, not both. You’ll be able to max both of their relationship levels regardless, so just choose who you prefer, or opt to have Verso continue to live the bachelor life a little while longer. It doesn’t matter.

Maelle Relationship level 7 – Should you lie to Maelle or tell the truth?

Where the wrong answer will block progress, however, is with Maelle. Once you’ve fulfilled her request to reach Relationship level 6, you can speak to her again to initiate the final relationship-advancing heart-to-heart.

Here, Verso divulges how long he’s been involved in the journey of our heroes, prompting Maelle to ask a question she already knows the answer to.

So, should you lie to Maelle or tell the truth? Attempt to cover your back or protect her feelings, and you’ll never reach Relationship level 7 with Maelle. The relationship will not progress any further.

Instead, you need to tell her the truth. She knows it anyway and simply needs to know she can trust him after all they’ve been through.

Do that and, while things will be a little awkward, she’ll ultimately thank Verso for his honesty, cementing the trusting bond between the two and unlocking her final Gradient skill.
