Brand-new FPS from Metro Exodus co-developer has suddenly dropped on Steam

The future rarely looks all too bright in videogames. From the dystopian cityscapes of Cyberpunk 2077 and Deus Ex to the war-torn outer space settings of Titanfall 2 or Stellaris, it’s all pretty grim. As might be expected from a new studio created by former Metro Exodus veterans, the future of its debut game La Quimera seems dismal, too. Fortunately, it’s also looked like a fascinating place to explore since we first heard of the game and now, at last, you can check it out for yourself thanks to its surprise launch today on Steam.

La Quimera takes place decades in the future, set in and around the future megacity of Nuevo Caracas, where the Venezuelan capital is under the control of brutal corporations and armed factions. It also, like Metro, mixes grimy military realism with supernatural influences, setting itself apart from other sci-fi games.

While the story, created by Nicolas Winding Refn and E.J.A Warren, seems compelling, La Quimera is also an FPS game that looks to take a few notes from the Crysis series in its characters’ superpowered robotic armor, which can be upgraded with new abilities throughout the campaign. It also allows players to play either a solo campaign or in co-op with groups of up to three players.

La Quimera’s pedigree as a game created by Reburn, which co-developed Metro Exodus as 4A Ukraine before breaking off and rebranding the studio, makes it even more enticing. Anyone eager to try it out for themselves can now do so. The Early Access version that launched today contains the campaign’s first four levels, with the rest of the game to be completed over the next 18 months.
