During a recent appearance on the Table for Two podcast, actress Sharon Stone revealed that one of her most famous roles, in the 1992 film Basic Instinct, caused her to lose custody of her son in 2004. According to Stone, the judge in the custody case referred to the famous scene in the movie where she briefly exposes herself while crossing her legs and asked her four-year-old son, “Do you know your mother makes sex movies?”
Stone, who played the seductive novelist Catherine Tramell in the film, said that the backlash from the scene made her avoid similar roles. Stone and her then-husband Ron Bronstein had adopted their son, Roan, in 2000. When the couple divorced in 2004, the judge awarded custody to Bronstein, causing Stone severe heartache.
“I ended up in the Mayo Clinic with extra heartbeats in my upper and lower chamber of my heart,” Stone said. “It literally broke my heart.”
Despite the fact that there is now much more sex and nudity on television than there was at the time of the movie’s release, Stone says that her treatment after Basic Instinct was “brutal.” “You saw maybe like a 16th of a second of possible nudity of me,” Stone said. “And I lost custody of my child.”
Stone said that others in Hollywood judged her for her role in the film and that when she was nominated for a Golden Globe for the part, “a bunch of people in the room laughed” when her name was called. Stone said that she now avoids roles that cast women in a sexualized light or with dark personalities. However, she also added that fans should not confuse actors with their characters, pointing out that “the guy who played Jeffrey Dahmer – no one thinks he’s a person who eats people.”
