Scientists report that a fossil of a partial face from a early human ancestor in Spain is between 1.1 and 1.4 million years old. The incomplete skull includes a section of the left cheek bone and upper jaw. It was found in a cave complex in northern Spain in 2022 and it’s the oldest known early human partial skull found in western Europe. A collection of older fossils from ancient human ancestors was previously found in Georgia. Researchers say the new fossil bears many similarities to Homo erectus, but there are also some differences. The study was published Wednesday in Nature.
