From Twilight to Dracula, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 to The Lost Boys, our favorite creatures of the night have been prevalent for decades, but for every franchise-starting addition to vampire lore, a few get lost amidst the waves of blood. Vampyr is one of those cases, yet this action RPG isn’t one to look past, and if you’ve been waiting to sink your fangs into a new game before Bloodlines 2, Vampyr is fang-fully at its lowest price ever. Just in time for the Halloween period.
While there may not be many people who count it among the best RPGs, I still think Vampyr is a great time if you’re looking to play something a little spooky. You play as Jonathan E. Reid, a doctor-turned-vampire who fights against his new vampiric instincts so that he can uphold his oath to protect and care for the citizens of London. That’s an internal dilemma if I’ve ever seen one.
After returning to London at the end of the Great War, you awaken in a mass grave and, due to your newfound bloodlust, accidentally kill your sister. Terrible start to the day, let’s be honest. As you get back into some semblance of your old life, you have to help victims of the Spanish Flu while also trying to figure out how you ended up being a vampire.
It’s not a scary experience by any means, but the unnatural duality of Reid’s adventure makes it a true horror game. You always have the choice to avoid killing innocent civilians and feasting on their blood, but that also makes you weaker and prevents you from leveling up and earning new skills. Some boss battles do require combat, but in reality, you can get through most situations without fighting, which creates a lot of fun challenges for repeat playthroughs.

However, if you do get into fights, Vampyr’s combat system does well to make you feel like a true-blooded vampire. While you can use makeshift weapons like you would in any action game, the main draw is your undead powers, like the ability to boil the blood of your enemies or using blood spears to wound foes. Every ability uses the blood you’ve consumed, so you’ll have to feast again if you want to stay powerful… but just how much innocent blood can you bear to have on your hands?
While you wait for the Bloodlines 2 release date to get here, Vampyr is a great RPG to keep you busy, especially if you’re a fan of the fang-tastic creatures. Right now, you can grab Vampyr for just $7.39 / £6.47 on Fanatical, netting you this underrated adventure for its lowest price ever, and honestly, you’re in for a blast. I’m actually jealous you get to play this hidden gem for the first time, as I’d love to have that experience again.
