Drones blasting AC/DC and Scarlett Johannson are helping biologists protect cattle from wolves

Read Time:30 Second

Biologists are using drones to scare wolves away from cattle. They blast sounds like the AC/DC song “Thunderstruck” and scenes from movies to deter the predators. The USDA has been experimenting with drones and thermal imaging to monitor wolf movements since at least 2022. The scientists have found that human voices scare wolves, even in the middle of hunting. Ranchers appreciate the help but worry that wolves might get used to the drones. The drone flights are continuing this summer in areas with high levels of conflict between wolves and cattle, including in northeastern California.
