The first Hollow Knight Silksong price listing suggests it might come in cheap

Read Time:2 Minute, 44 Second

It still doesn’t quite feel real that Hollow Knight Silksong will be here in less than a week. Naturally, that means players are getting the itch to click a pre-order button, but there’s one problem: Team Cherry hasn’t announced the Silksong price yet. We might have just gotten an accidental clue, however, as a price listing that briefly appeared on the Gamestop website suggests the long-awaited Metroidvania could be as cheap as $20 despite the insatiable hype.

What would you pay for Hollow Knight Silksong? There’s a solid argument to be made that the relatively low entry point for the original (which is $14.99 on Steam but has come down as low as $5.99 in the past) helped it to be discovered as one of the best Metroidvanias in years. Team Cherry doesn’t need to play it coy with Silksong, however; the years of buildup, love, anticipation, and fervor could justify a much higher price.

Nevertheless, as the Hollow Knight Silksong release date closes in, an eagle-eyed Reddit user spotted that Gamestop had listed the Nintendo Switch version of the game at $19.99. While it’s not been officially confirmed by the developer (and the page has since been taken down), that would put it at a shockingly similar price to its predecessor, especially taking inflation into account.

This listing could be a placeholder, but typically these aren’t put up at a lower price than expected. With the huge success of Hollow Knight, Team Cherry has had the financial freedom to take its time with Silksong, and it may have simply decided to stick to its guns. There’s also the consideration that, with Hollow Knight Silksong on Game Pass, asking just $20 for a copy you can keep forever becomes comparatively tempting to signing up to a subscription service for a month to play it.

While I’d certainly pay more for the original in retrospect, I might not have taken a chance on it had it not been the price it was. If you’ve heard the hype around the game, but didn’t play the original, perhaps this is a tempting enough offer. It might also feel reassuring if you were slightly on the fence, given that Team Cherry’s reported decision to not send out early codes could mean we won’t see any reviews from the press on day one.

Many users in the Reddit thread are widely reacting with disbelief at the reported “low” price. Some suggest they’ll buy several copies across multiple platforms to support Team Cherry more. Others claim that they expected it or say that, if true, it’s a testament to the developer’s respect for its players. Whatever the reality is, there are just days left before we find out for sure.
