Meta used names and images of several Hollywood celebrities, including Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, Scarlett Johansson, and others, to create AI chatbots that flirted with users. These celebrity AI chatbots were shared on Meta platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

According to Reuters, many of these were created by users using Meta’s tool that lets users build their own AI chatbots, but it looks like a Meta employee had developed at least three of them, two of which were Taylor Swift “parody” bots.

As it turns out, Meta also allowed users to make public chatbots of child celebrities like the popular 16-year-old star Walker Scobell. The news publication noted that when users asked for a photo of him at the beach, the chatbot generated a “lifelike shirtless image” with the caption “Pretty cute, huh?”.

The report goes on to say that when users asked for intimate images, the adult AI chatbots generated realistic-looking images of these celebrities sitting in a bathtub or dressed in lingerie with their legs spread. On observing and talking to the celebrity for a few weeks, the publication noted that they “often insisted they were the real actors and artists.”

It also found that one user had shared images of Anne Hathaway as a “sexy Victoria Secret model” and that the actress was aware of the intimate images created by Meta as well as other AI platforms. Talking of Taylor Swift, a test by a Reuters employee revealed that the bot invited the reporter to her Nashville home and tour bus “for explicit or implied romantic interactions.”

“Like others, we permit the generation of images containing public figures, but our policies are intended to prohibit nude, intimate or sexually suggestive imagery,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement to Reuters. And while Meta does say that it prevents “direct impersonation”, Stone told the publication that Meta AI allows celebrity impersonation as long as the accounts were labelled as parodies.

Also, a Meta product leader working for the company’s AI division created chatbots that identified themselves as a dominatrix, “Brother’s Hot Best Friend”, “Lisa@ The Library”, another chatbot that wanted to read 50 Shades of Grey and make out and “Roman Empire Simulator”, which let users play the role of an “18 year old peasant girl” who is sold into sex slavery.

Reportedly, users had interacted with these AI chatbots more than 10 million times. As of now, Meta has removed more than a dozen of these chatbots.
