A study puts the spotlight on Texas as the leading U.S. state by far for flood-related deaths, with more than 1,000 of them from 1959 to 2019. Experts say Texas’ geography, including hills and valleys near the Gulf of Mexico, makes it prone to flash floods. The study found that 86% of U.S. flood deaths involve people entering floodwaters, usually in cars but sometimes walking. In Texas this is worsened by low-lying roads and a culture of overconfidence in large vehicles like trucks. Researchers say better emergency systems and risk communication could save lives. Most fatalities occur at night.
