It’s taken Clair Obscur Expedition 33 just one day to hit a huge sales milestone

Read Time:2 Minute, 40 Second

I really didn’t expect at the start of this week that anything would come close to drawing my attention away from the Oblivion Remaster. Yet here I am, sitting here with my jaw on the floor at just how big the launch of Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has been. The debut game from French studio Sandfall Interactive, this gorgeous turn-based RPG is firmly in the conversation for Game of the Year – but great quality doesn’t always translate into great sales. However, Sandfall appears to have achieved both. Despite its inclusion on Xbox and PC Game Pass, Clair Obscur Expedition 33 has already hit a major sales milestone, just one day after it launched.

Yesterday I wrote about how (on Steam, at least) Clair Obscur Expedition 33 was having a stellar opening day. It debuted with a peak concurrent player count of over 50,000 on Valve’s platform and sat on a seriously impressive 93% user review score. Since then, things have gotten even better for the RPG – at the time of writing, it’s got over 71,000 concurrent players, and that user score has crept up to 94%.

Steam stats are helpful for getting a general read on how a game is doing, but with Expedition 33 also launching on the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S and PS5 consoles, and Game Pass, it doesn’t give the full picture. Well, this might.

Sandfall and publisher Kepler Interactive have confirmed that over 500,000 copies of Clair Obscur Expedition 33 have been sold in the roughly 24 hours or so it’s been live – a monumental achievement.

Unless it’s using some loose wording, this should concern paid sales of the game only, and shouldn’t include the huge amount of people who will no doubt be playing on Xbox and PC Game Pass. Given its availability on Microsoft’s popular subscription service, these sales figures are all the more impressive.

“A milestone for us, reached sooner than we’d ever imagined,” its announcement post reads. “Thank you all.”

If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about and why it’s being touted as a GOTY contender, read our extremely positive 8/10 Clair Obscur Expedition 33 review. To give you a sense of just how universally loved this game is by reviewers, it’s currently sitting on the joint-highest Metacritic average score of the year (92) alongside Blue Prince, and on fellow aggregator OpenCritic, it’s the best-reviewed game of 2025 so far with a 91 average score.
