A strong solar storm is headed to Earth and this could cause colorful aurora displays in parts of the United States. The sun burped out bursts of energy that could cause northern lights as far south as Oregon, Iowa and northern Pennsylvania Tuesday night. Experts are monitoring for possible power grid and communication disruptions. The sun is at the maximum phase of its 11-year activity cycle, making auroras more common and widespread. Last year, the strongest geomagnetic storm in two decades slammed Earth, producing light displays across the Northern Hemisphere.
