There are quite a few ambitious multiplayer space sandboxes around these days that offer up huge systems, galaxies, or even universes for players to make their mark in. Alongside the likes of Star Citizen or No Man’s Sky, there’s Eve Online. But not content with just the one massive space game, developer CCP Games is spinning up yet another Eve experience – the player-controlled, blockchain-integrated survival MMO, Eve Frontier. Access to Frontier, in its current alpha state, is typically locked behind paid founder packs. However, for the next ten days, it’s totally free to try.
Boasting a huge persistent universe of thousands of star systems, Eve Frontier is all about player freedom. Not just the freedom to explore wherever you want, but to set up alliances, political factions, bases, stargates, trade systems, services, and even your own currencies. Enormous space battles can break out, and star systems can range from unexplored opportunities, to well-established community hubs of commerce, to hostile territories controlled by factions of players that won’t be happy if you venture onto their turf. It is shaping up to be an MMO of epic proportions.
However, its use of blockchain technology to maintain and track all of the evolution its persistent world goes through, and as a way for players to trade goods and services with one another, has caused some scepticism. Many gamers are understandably wary of any project that uses this tech due to the amount of predatory (or just straight up crap) NFT-stuffed games that have emerged in recent years. CCP is stating that Eve Frontier isn’t a blockchain game first and a genuinely enjoyable MMO second, and that it’s simply the right kind of technology to use for an evolving universe where players can control and so many aspects of it.
Eve Frontier is still in its infancy, only just launching in a closed alpha state back in December 2024, but once it’s fully ready in a few years’ time, it will launch as a free PC game with optional subscriptions.

As mentioned, access to the current, early version of the game normally requires the purchase of a founder pack. But for a limited time, you can jump in and start exploring without spending a dime.
A free trial for Eve Frontier is live right now and will run until Monday, April 21. All you need to do is sign up for an account to enter, or if you already have one, you can simply hop straight in.
